A whistleblower revealed how Sunday Riley employees faked reviews on Sephora's ecommerce site to increase their sales. It was ordered that employees create multiple accounts and write glowing reviews on the Sephora site to increase sales.

The FTC began an investigation of the Texas-based firm, finding that Ms. Riley created the reviews and encouraged her employees.

She instructed them to use "virtual privacy networks" (VPNs) before writing reviews so that they could not be traced to the real IP address of the company and were less likely to get caught. The reviewers were instructed to "rewrite' the reviews in a way that would make them seem more relatable. For example, "I have tried everything but this is the only one that works."

The FTC concluded from its investigation that the company "was aware of the possibility that some employees may have been generating false positive reviews on Sephora’s website." However, they did not mention how the company learned about it.

The FTC claimed that the CEO and the company violated antitrust laws when they used the ecommerce site to promote products which they had no intention of selling. The agency also accused the company of deceiving consumers by claiming that the fake reviews were written by ordinary people and not by the brand's employees. The agency wants to see the company stop in future.
